Saint Anthony of Padua was a friar of the Franciscan Order who lived in Portugal in the 13th century. According to the ancient tales, Saint Anthony of Padua protects you from thieves, helps to find lost or stolen items, intercedes for the suffering, heals the sick and helps women to conceive and to give birth. Compared to other Lithuanian regions, the belief in Saint Anthony of Padua is more spread in Samogitia.
The devotion of the locals in Kretinga to this saint has been known since the 17th century when the altar of St. Anthony of Padua was bult in the church. In 1862, the relics of St. Anthony of Padua were brought to Kretinga. Ever since then, the congregation has been receiving plenary indulgence on the day of St. Anthony of Padua, i.e. the 13th of June.
Nowadays, the Saint Anthony of Padua Feat Day is celebrated every summer together with the Kretinga City Festival. The festival traditionally gives tribute to Jan Karol Chodkiewicz who was the founder of Kretinga City and holds a traditional folk art and crafts fair, accompanied by concerts, exhibitions and other festivities.
